Alpheus Hyatt Verrill (1871 - 1954) was an American archaeologist, explorer, inventor, photographer, illustrator and author[1]. In the 1920s and 30s, he was a frequent contributor to the science fiction magazine Amazing Stories, to which he wrote many tales in the "lost world" subgenre, such as the 1926 novella Beyond the Pole. He traveled extensively through South America and the West Indies, and authored numerous books on natural history.
Verrill was one of the many pulp authors who were spoofed in the comedic short story "The Battle that Ended the Century", by H. P. Lovecraft and R. H. Barlow. In the story, Verrill and George Allan England are mentioned briefly as a pair of adventurers named "A. Hijacked Barrell and G. A. Scotland".
