"A Gift from the Stars" is a short Cthulhu Mythos story by author Sheldon Woodbury. It was first published in the thematic anthology Lovecraft after Dark by James Ward Kirk Publishing in November 2015.
Synopsis[]
Told in the form of a letter from H. P. Lovecraft to Clark Ashton Smith, "A Gift from the Stars" describes how Lovecraft's mother slowly devolved into insanity, whispering the secrets her broken mind had learned to her son during his formative years.
It culminates with Lovecraft as an adult attending his mother's deathbed in an insane asylum, where Lovecraft himself is exposed to the horrific truth of her ravings, and his belief that he is to suffer the same fate as she.
