The Alert is a heavily armored steam yacht which originated in Dunedin, New Zealand, and at one point was manned by "a queer and evil-looking crew of Kanakas and half-castes," in addition to being members of the Cthulhu cult. The crew of the Alert was slain in retaliation for attacking the schooner Emma, and upon being discovered by the Vigilant, the Alert was towed to Sydney, Australia where it was sold for commercial use.
