Biography[]

In the 1920s, Allen was the head factor at the small trading post of M'gonga, close to the Ugandan border. In January 1929, when the post's physician Dr. Thomas Slauenwite was at a loss about how to treat the hunter Mevana, who had been bitten by a devil-fly, Allen suggested that Slauenwite contact his predecessor, Dr. Lincoln, who "had a profound knowledge of the local sicknesses". Lincoln's suggestion of applying intramuscular injections of tryparsamide proved effective and resulted in Mevana making a full recovery.

Later on, Slauenwite organised a party led by Mevana to travel to the area in which the devil-flies lived so he could capture some for study. Slauenwite convinced Allen to authorise this by claiming that the trip was "in the interest of local health work".

Slauenwite had dinner with Allen on November 17, the same day that Batta died. (HPL: "Winged Death")
