Ambrose Gwinnett Bierce (June 24, 1842 – circa 1914) was an American short story writer, journalist, poet, and Civil War veteran.

He notably wrote the short stories "Haïta the Shepherd" and "An Inhabitant of Carcosa", which introduced the names of Hastur and Carcosa, which were later expanded upon by Robert W. Chambers, H. P. Lovecraft and August Derleth.
