Arkham Asylum is a fictional institution in the Cthulhu Mythos inspired by the works of H. P. Lovecraft. Located in the city from which it takes its name, it is a sanatarium which exists for the treatment of the mentally ill.
Some sources posit that the asylum is not as innocent as it likes to appear: according to these, Dr. Herbert West used/uses the facility to continue his attempts at perfecting the re-agent (EXP: Feeders from Within, Army of Darkness Vs. Re-Animator).
Behind the Mythos[]
It should be noted that the name Arkham Asylum is only used by later contributors to the Cthulhu Mythos: in Lovecraft's work Arkham Sanitarium is the city's mental health institution. As different sources show the two to be in existence at roughly the same time, there are several possible solutions:
- the institutions have been conflated
- they are the same institution which was renamed at some point
- more recent authors have confused the institution with the D.C. Comics facility (see trivia, below).
