Lovecraft's works directly. "Behold, I Stand at the Door and Knock" is a short Cthulhu Mythos story by American author Robert M. Price.

Synopsis[]

A young man who fancies himself something of an occultist jumps at the chance to buy an edition of Volume I of The Revelations of Glaaki from a door-to-door salesman. However, once he begins to read, he realises that he has been tricked, and must now become a herald for the dark power or face a dire punishment…

Characters[]

  • Sid Hingley, an aimless man in a dead-end life.
  • Errol Undercliffe, an apparently-ordinary travelling salesman offering a 12-volume set of The Revelations of Glaaki.

Publication History[]

"Behold, I Stand at the Door and Knock" was first published in the Chaosium anthology Cthulhu's Heirs in March 1994, and was later included in the collection of Price’s own works Blasphemies & Revelations in November 2008.

Trivia[]

  • The story takes place in Lower Brichester, a location created by Ramsay Campbell as part of his Severn Valley mythos setting.
  • Sid Hingley works in an establishment named the Black Goat, a clear reference to Shub-Niggurath, the Black Goat of the Woods with a Thousand Young.
