This subject contains information from the Expanded Cthulhu Mythos, and not based on H.P. Lovecraft's works directly. The Black Buddha is an avatar of Nyarlathotep who manifests in the East.

Appearance[]

Apparently the Black Buddha is depicted as a disfigured black statue of Buddha.

Information[]

Little is known about this Nyarlathotep mask. He is worshiped by a group of heretical Buddhists, the Brotherhood of the Black Lotus, who also revere Chaugnar Faugn. He apparently confuses those who seek enlightenment and corrupts them to lead them away from the right path, leading them to join the ranks of the Brotherhood.

Trivia[]

  • This avatar could have something to do with the "Black Lotus", a flower whose toxins directly affect the nervous system, causing hallucinations and sensations that lead to madness and even death to everyone who suffers from them. (source?)

In popular culture[]

  • This avatar of Nyarlathotep appears in Persona 2: Eternal Punishment.
