Buddha is a historical figure from ancient India who is part of the Buddhist cosmology. Whom was first used by Chaosium in 2005 for its Call of Cthulhu RPG as an Outer God.

Background

The Cosmic Buddha is a timeless entity who exists beyond time and space, where it appears as a statue. Changes such as a facial expression or a new hand position are instantaneous with no visible movement from the old to new position. On Earth a mortal on a path to enlightenment awakened to the cosmos true nature. He became the Cosmic Buddhas's physical incarnation on Earth, the Body of Manifestation (Nirmâna-Kâya), the Living Buddha. Upon his death, he ascended to the Outer Realm of Nirvana, where he merged with the Cosmic Buddha's Absolute Body (Dharma-Kâya).

Just as the multiverse has an infinite number of dimensions, so there are an infinite number of Buddhas, each of which watches over a specific dimension. Every 3000 years, a mortal becomes the Living Buddha thereby renewing the teachings of Dharma on Earth. After which it ascends to merge with the Cosmic Buddha. When the Lord Buddha manifests on Earth, it is usually to those whom are on the path to enlightenment, appearing as glowing man who is in the lotus seating position. Behind the hovering man is a spectral purple flame. Often the unmoving man is surrounded by a court of swirling devas and bodhisattvas.
