“ | There is a whole secret cult of evil men (a man of your mystical erudition will understand me when I link them with Hastur and the Yellow Sign) devoted to the purpose of tracking them down and injuring them on behalf of monstrous powers from other dimensions. It is against these aggressors—not against normal humanity—that the drastic precautions of the Outer Ones are directed. Incidentally, I learned that many of our lost letters were stolen not by the Outer Ones but by the emissaries of this malign cult. | „ | |
~ Letter to Albert Wilmarth, attributed to Henry Wentworth Akeley (HPL: The Whisperer in Darkness) |
The Brotherhood of the Yellow Sign, also referred to as the Brothers of the Yellow Sign and the Cult of the Yellow Sign, is an evil fanatic cult of Hastur in its King in Yellow form. There are conflicting reports about its origin; some say it started among the Serpent Men of Valusia, but it seems more likely that it started in the underground land of K'n-yan. (HPL: The Whisperer in Darkness)
Symbol[]
They identify each other by hand gesture or by wearing rings and earrings with a yellow stone.
Members[]
The Brothers are led by a group of immortal humanoid alien beings from the blue-litten K'n-yan. These immortals possess advanced technology, as well as a number of telepathic powers, including the ability to dematerialize, read minds, and paralyze and hypnotize their victims. The Brothers have a small number of followers among the inhabitants of the surface.
Actions[]
Occasionally they gather to destroy Mi-go outposts and to worship Hastur and Shub-Niggurath.
One of the Brothers' secondary purposes is the suppression of archaeology in the Gobi desert, where they carry out their most sacrosanct rites. It has been suggested that the Brotherhood of the Yellow Sign has founded all the religions that have passed through the world to strengthen the Great Old Ones, but it sounds highly unlikely.
