Summary[]

Alcoholic World War I veteran turned private investigator Edward Pierce is summoned to the whaling town of Darkwater on the island of the same name in order to investigate the case of the Hawkins family, who perished in a mysterious fire. While investigating a nightmarish painting made by artist Sarah Hawkins, Edward finds himself hunted by a Dimensional Shambler, also earning himself the ire of the local rum-running crime syndicate and cultists who worship the Leviathan and its progenitor Cthulhu.

Characters[]

  • Edward Pierce - A member of the Lost Batallion and WW1 veteran who joined the Wentworth Detective Agency before degenerating into alcoholism. He is hired to find out the truth behind Sarah Hawkins, her mysterious paintings, and the fire that supposedly killed her along with her family. He is the "Chosen One" necessary to awaken Cthulhu.
  • Sarah Hawkins - A painter of mysterious and macabre paintings that are, nevertheless, extremely desired as well as famous. She was mentally ill and saw visions. Supposedly, she started a fire that killed her, her husband, and her young son. She is actually alive and working with the cult of Cthulhu to revive her dead child.
  • Charles Hawkins - A failed importer and exporter who inherited all of his money. He is Sarah's husband and survived the fire that supposedly killed him by becoming an unholy fusion of man as well as Star Spawn. He is a Cthulhu cultist and working for the Leviathan.
  • Catherine "Cat" Baker - the female head of the local gang of bootleggers and smugglers that run Darkwater Island (or at least think they do until the cult of Cthulhu proves otherwise). She is hardy enough to resist most of the supernatural shenanigans going on.
  • Thomas Fuller - The head doctor at the Riverside institute. He has been experimenting on the patients at his hospital using the samples of the Leviathan's DNA he's acquired. He is wildly respected in his field and seemingly capable of resurrection.
  • Marie Colden - A beautiful doctor at the Riverside Institute that believes Doctor Fuller is engaged in unethical medical experimentation but is unaware of the existence of the supernatural. She becomes Pierce's ally despite this.
  • Captain Fitzroy - The captain of the sole remaining functional boat in Darkwater Island as well as the head of the docks. He is also secretly the head of the cult of Cthulhu and over a century old. Despite being head of the cult, he has very little control and both Pierce as well as Sarah Hawkins have far larger importance to Leviathan's plans.
  • Ethan Bradley - A Darkwater Island police officer who is well meaning but woefully incompetent at his job.
  • Leviathan - A Star Spawn that allowed itself to be eaten many years ago in order to infect the population of Darkwater Island. It is in control of the cult through telepathy and working to awaken its master, Cthulhu.
