“ | The mad deserve peace of mind, not death of the spirit | „ |
Carolyn Fern, the Psychologist, is a character created by Chaosium as an investigator character for their Mythos-inspired board game Arkham Horror.
Biography[]
Gaining her degree at Rhode Island Hospital during the 1920s, Carolyn spent a further year training as an allopathic psychiatrist at Butler before taking up a residency position at the Lemarchand Institute under the supervision of physician Dr. Spencer.
When one of her patients, one Malachai Farrow psychologically damaged by experiences he underwent while in the US Army, was murdered in exactly the same way he had been dreaming of, Carolyn took a leave of absence from the hospital and travelled to Arkham to look into Farrow's psychological history.
What she found there was a plot by both human cultists and the alien Mi-Go to bring madness to the world. Fortunately, Carolyn made the acquaintance of Henry Armitage, Mark Harrigan and Diana Stanley, unique individuals with knowledge of the occult, and the group were able to thwart the conspiracy against mankind.
Behind the Mythos[]
Carolyn Fern made her debut appearance in the first edition of Chaosium's board game of cosmic horror Arkham Horror and has appeared in every iteration of the game since, despite the licence transferring to Fantasy Flight Games. She has also featured in other Fantasy Flight games including Eldritch Horror, Arkham Horror: The Card Game, Mansions of Madness and Elder Sign. In addition, a prepainted plastic miniature of Carolyn was released under the Arkham Horror Premium Figures line, and she appeared as a main character in Fantasy Flight's Mythos fiction novel Feeders from Within.
Trivia[]
- The name of the Lemarchand Institute attended by Carolyn for her residency is a possible nod to Clive Barker's Hellraiser franchise, which appears to have been influenced to a certain degree by the Cthulhu Mythos.
