The H.P. Lovecraft Wiki

This subject is written on a topic in the real world and reflects factual information. 🐙 Castle Freak is a 1995 low budget horror film. Stuart Gordon (who was given a free hand in virtually all aspects of the film, but only a $500,000 budget) directed, Dennis Paoli and Gordon screenwrote, with Mythos stalwart Jeffrey Combs starring in the lead male role and Barbara Crampton in the lead female role. The four of them had previously worked together on both Re-Animator and From Beyond, partial film adaptations of H. P. Lovecraft's short stories "Herbert West--Reanimator" and "From Beyond", respectively.

The film was remade in 2020, although this version adds in specific references to elements of the Cthulhu Mythos, establishing itself as more of an Expanded Mythos work (see main article (Castle Freak (2020 film)).

Synopsis[]

A grieving American family inherits a 12th-century castle in Italy, unaware that a homicidal and deformed man lies chained in the dungeons. When the man breaks loose, the family faces a fight for survival.

Trivia[]

  • Director Stuart Gordon stated that both he and scriptwriter Dennis Paoli drew their inspiration for Castle Freak from the H. P. Lovecraft short story "The Outsider". [1]
