...other beings with wider, stronger, or different range of senses might not only see very differently the things we see, but might see and study whole worlds ...which lie close at hand yet can never be detected with the senses we have. - HPL: From Beyond

This subject contains information from the Expanded Cthulhu Mythos, and not based on H.P. Lovecraft's works directly. The Cloudbeasts are beings from the Dreamlands. Of dubious origin, they appear in a S. Petersen's Field Guide to Creatures of the Dreamlands, written by Sandy Petersen.

Appearance[]

According to the manual, they are beings whose shape is reminiscent of a living cloud, capable of forming bulbous eyes, twisted jaws, long and fibrous limbs and other types of organs in their bodies, which can be reabsorbed into their vaporous mass if they wish. Apparently they never make any kind of sound.

Habitat[]

According to the same manual, the cloudbeasts live by flying over the ocean and often move following the trail of temperate and tropical storms. Apparently, they have been sighted mainly in the southern seas and, according to some, they do not come from the Dreamlands that are connected to our world, but from the dream plane of some remote planet, a theory supported by the strange anatomy of the creature.

Behavior[]

Cloudbeasts float freely in the sky in search of food. If they observe a possible prey, they descend towards it and wrap it in its nebulous body, ready to process it by employing a yet unknown digestion system.

When one of these beings reaches a size of between seventy and one hundred meters, it ascends in the air and fragments, giving rise to new cloudbeasts, whose initial size is around ten meters.

Cloudbeasts can grow and wane numerous times throughout their lives, which can last anywhere from twenty to thirty meters. They usually grow in the periods when hunting is abundant, being the reasons that can force them to lose volume, stress and malnutrition. The manual also indicates that they are very resistant, since they can regenerate to repair practically any injury they suffer.
