Lovecraft's short story "The Thing on the Doorstep". He is an architect and the best friend of the story's protagonist, Edward Pickman Derby.

In Fritz Lieber's short story "To Arkham and the Stars", Upton is mentioned as having designed Miskatonic University's new Administration Building and its Pickman Nuclear Laboratory, as well as Arkham's Polish Quarter apartment development. Albert Wilmarth remarks that Upton "has had a distinguished career ever since he was given a clean bill of mental health and discharged with a verdict of ‘justified homicide’."
