Biography[]

Born c. 1857 on a plantation on the banks of the James River in Virginia, Delapore after the Civil War moved with his family to Massachusetts, his mother's home state. He grew up a "stolid Yankee", making a fortune in manufacturing. He lived in the town of Bolton with his one son, Alfred Delapore.

After World War I took Alfred to England as a flyer, his father bought Exham Priory, the family's ancestral home in England, in 1918. When Alfred was maimed in the war later that year and died two years later, the bereaved father decided to relocate to Exham. He began restoring the ruin in 1921, and moved in on July 16, 1923.
