Dythalla, also known as the Lord of Lizards, is a fictional entity in the expanded Cthulhu Mythos. The character was originally created by American author James Ambuehl for his 1985 poem "Dythalla".

Background[]

Dythalla is a Great Old One that takes the form of a giant reptilian creature with a long serpentine mass of sucker-disced tentacles crowned around its head. Worshipped as a god in the ancient land of Altuas, a temple for worship was built in a courtyard west from the gates of Temme-Kiroth. The temple has an eighteen-foot-tall stone statue of Dythalla, with numerous lizards squirming and scurrying upon every inch of the floor.

During one of his conquests, a ruthless military despot called Parthias the Conqueror raided the temple, torturing and killing the priests on their altar. Further mocking and taunting their god, Parthias urinated on the statue of Dythalla; however, the foul-smelling stream was absorbed into the stone, causing the statue to glow a yellowish hue and transform into a living creature with flesh. Shortly afterwards, Dythalla chomped off Parthias' head, drenching his body in gore. (EXP: "Lord of Lizards")
