"Echo of a Distant Scream" is a short story by American author Lee Clark Zumpe.
Synopsis[]
Tisha Hewitt agrees to dinner with private eye Frank Nardi as part of a consultancy, and their conversation awakens old emotions about the unexplained disappearance of her brother many years ago. After re-examining the evidence, she uncovers a pattern of similar occurrences stretching back many years, which the locals seem to have swept under the rug.
A final investigation of the area where her brother and several of the other vanished townsfolk were last seen grants Tisha a glimpse of the ultimate fate of the missing and, perhaps, an element of closure.
