Eibon is the primary and single most important character in Clark Ashton Smith's Hyperborean Cycle.

History[]

Eibon, known as "the Unfathomable", was the most powerful sorcerer in the ancient land of Hyperborea. He was born in the city of Iqqua, the son of the kingdom's chief archivist. Orphaned at an early age when his family was murdered by the priests of the goddess Yhoundeh, he was taken in by the warlock Zylac as an apprentice. Unfortunately for Eibon, Zylac himself also died during the course of a botched magical ritual.

Twenty-one years old, Eibon wandered the world until he settled in a tower on the Mhu Thulan peninsula, where he worshiped his father's god, the Great Old One Tsathoggua. Over the years, his fame grew: he was not only said to be a magician of prodigious ability, but also an accomplished sculptor and poet. Among his many works, the most recognised was his magnum opus, the mystical Book of Eibon.

Eibon was later accused of heresy by Morghi the Inquisitor, the high priest of Yhoundeh; when Morghi's acolytes came for him, he escaped to Saturn using a magical portal given to him as a gift from Tsathoggua. Morghi went in pursuit, but the portal closed behind him and, with no idea of how to survive on Saturn, was forced to ally himself with his enemy, the two becoming firm friends over the following years. After gaining the trust of the indigenous peoples, both Eibon and Morghi were worshipped as gods.

Divining the strife which would befall the solar system, Eibon wove colossal nets to catch a being which was en route to destroy the Earth: one of the Seeds of Azathoth.

Eibon's current whereabouts are unknown; however, some believe that his spirit is now to be found in the Dreamlands.

Trivia[]

  • As Randolph Carter is a loosely fictionalised version of Howard Phillips Lovecraft, Eibon shares many parallels with its creator Clark Ashton Smith: they were both sculptors, writers, poets, and had an interest in the occult.
