This subject contains information from the Expanded Cthulhu Mythos, and not based on H.P. Lovecraft's works directly. The Esoteric Order of Dagon is a cult which features prominently in many Cthulhu Mythos works, especially those involving Innsmouth and the Deep Ones.

History[]

Lovecraft's Works[]

The Order was founded by Captain Obed Marsh in Innsmouth using the practices learned from the inhabitants of a Polynesian island. The people of Innsmouth carried out ritual sacrifices on Devil Reef to appease the Deep Ones. In 1846 during one of these sacrifices Captain Marsh and several members of the Order of Dagon were arrested, though no formal charges were made. It was disbanded when the United States government launched an attack on the town in 1928. (HPL: The Shadow Over Innsmouth)

Expanded Mythos Works[]

CthulhuTech[]

The Esoteric Order of Dagon is an organisation controlled by the Deep Ones and their hybrid agents. Prior to the 21st century, they spread their influence across the world and recruited humans. Their ultimate objective is to free Cthulhu from his imprisonment, and therefore are searching for R'lyeh. Meanwhile they breed with willing cultists or unwilling captured humans in rape camps (mostly the latter) to increase their numbers. At their disposal are mecha, the Star-Spawn of Cthulhu, monsters of the deep, and servitors of Cthulhu. They control the oceans and most of the coastal regions of the world, having complete naval supremacy. (EXP: CthulhuTech)

Providence[]

According to one account, it is the literary equivalent of the Friends of Oannes, based in St Jude's parish in Salem. (EXP: Providence)

The Sinking City[]

In his quest to find the cause of the flood and madness plaguing Oakmont, Massachusetts, Charles Reed infiltrates a local chapter of the Esoteric Order of Dagon. Posing as a charity called "Everyone's Obvious Duty," they initially appear to be helping the people of the city, such as feeding the poor and residents affected by the flood with stockpiles of fish, but have much more sinister intentions.

Behind the Mythos[]

Fans of Lovecraft eventually made an amateur publication association named the Esoteric Order of Dagon.

There exist a real occult order called the Esoteric Order of Dagon (E.O.D) that works with Yog-Sothothery, mainly from a pure Lovecraftian approach.

Another occult society also named the Esoteric Order of Dagon (E.'.O.'.D.'.) exists in real life, mixing concepts from the writings of Lovecraft and the occultist author Aleister Crowley, among other things.[1]
