...other beings with wider, stronger, or different range of senses might not only see very differently the things we see, but might see and study whole worlds ...which lie close at hand yet can never be detected with the senses we have. - HPL: From Beyond

The Cult of the Bloody Tongue is an ancient African cult that worships the God of the Bloody Tongue, one of the avatars of Nyarlathotep (EXP: Call of Cthulhu: Masks of Nyarlathotep).

Description[]

This cult began its activity in western Kenya, but it spread throughout the continent and there is even the possibility that it has a presence in other places on earth. While it is usually closed to non-African people, all Nyarlathotep worshipers are welcome to worship.

Anthropologist Nigel Blackwell wrote a book called "Dark Cults of Africa" in which some details about this cult are discussed. Thanks to this text, it is known that they perform rituals on the Mountain of Dark Wind, in the Aberdare Mountains, which include murders of people kidnapped in the vicinity, as well as beheadings and scarifications with the emblem of the cult. It is not for this reason that the people who lived near the cult centers were terrified, especially when the colonial governments (back in 1928) ignored the matter, putting it down to simple tribal brawls.

The most important of its celebrations is the orgiastic ritual once every five years, in which its deity manifests itself, causing terrible storms in the area. These rituals are led by a high priestess, chosen at age 14 and trained in the magical arts on Mountain of the Black Wind itself by inhuman servants of Nyarlathotep. As for the followers, those who perform the sacrifices wear a red headscarf as a reference to their god, using a machete as a weapon.

The Cult in New York[]

Many of its members are Kenyan illegal immigrants who have forged American citizenship documents. However, in recent years, their ranks have swelled from degenerate elements of New York's slums, and race is no longer a major prerequisite for membership. The name of the sect comes from one of the aspects of Nyarlathotep in which it shows a blood-red tentacle instead of a face. They have headquarters in a Harlem store that sells African tribal paraphernalia. The rites take place in the cellar, which has been suitably enlarged for such use. The shop is run by Silas N'Kwane, while the sect's sorcerer is Mukumga N'Dari. Assassins of the Bloodtongue often use the pranga (an African long machete) in their attacks, although American members have sometimes used pistols. The assassins or executioners of the sect wear a terrifying-looking cap, with a red band that hangs from the forehead.

Notable members[]

  • Mukunga M’Dari: High Priest of the Cult of the Bloody Tongue in his New York branch. This powerful enemy enjoys the unspeakable eliminating the adversaries of his god. He knows the location of Mountain of the Black Wind, he knows what is hidden in the temple cavern, and he has some clues about plan of Nyarlathotep, but he will never reveal this information to anyone unless he is magically compelled. If he is about to die, his last act will be to contact Nyarlathotep to ask him to avenge him. If he learns that the investigators are heading to London, he will contact Edward Gavigan to warn him, but only if he is convinced that he cannot liquidate them on his own. He knows something about the Chinese sect, but has no way of alerting them if investigators decide to go to Shanghai first, and he is completely unaware of Huston's activities in Australia and elsewhere. By day he works on the docks, and lives in a very poor room on the East Side at 129th Street, where there is only a mat, some clothing, and many Kenyan prints, most of which have some mystical significance. Sometimes it occurs to him to follow distracted walkers through Central Park. He can also be found in the bar of Mabel la Gorda, a slum on 139th Street corner with 6th Avenue, which is quite popular with native Africans. Although they are rarely seen there, the whites can go perfectly. The regulars know Mukunga and say he has the power, the ju-ju. They are right.
  • Silas N'Kwane: In charge of the House of Ju-Ju, in whose basement is the headquarters of the sect in New York.
  • Chakota: The Chakota is made up of dozens of human faces attached to a roughly cylindrical, vermiform mass of sickly-looking muscles streaked with purple. The faces cry, moan and howl in a terrible way. The Chakota can move, but not leave the well, which is 1.80m deep and 1m in diameter. The faces of the Chakota are those of its victims, since each new victim adds his face to the previous ones after about two hours of his body being digested. The monster kills by biting and devouring its victims with its multiple faces. There is no significant limit to the number of victims it can devour, since its mass can extend indefinitely. Anyone who sees the face of a familiar person in it may suffer a loss of sanity. Anyone bitten will lose sanity.
