The Void is a 2016 supernatural horror film from writers and directors Steven Kostanski and Jeremy Gillespie whose premise and imagery has been heavily influenced by elements of the Cthulhu Mythos.
Synopsis[]
A mismatched group of people, including a pregnant woman and her grandfather, two police officers, a trio of country folk and a handful of medical staff, find themselves under siege from mysterious cultists in a hospital which is preparing to close down.
As the film progresses, it is revealed that the hospital stands on a portal to a hellish dimension, and several of the group begin to transform into eldritch monstrosities. The only remaining doctor in the hospital is secretly one of the cultists, and is attempting to bring otherdimensional creatures through the portal, but is ultimately stopped by one of the survivors.
Behind the Mythos[]
One of the writers and directors, Jeremy Gillespie, had been working at Pinewood Studios at the same time noted director Guillermo del Toro was working on the abortive movie adaptation of At the Mountains of Madness, and happened to overhear him talking about the project. According to Gillespie this “sort of got the wheels in my mind working . . . that was sort of where the imagery was birthed.”
