Fred Davis Chappell (28 May 1936 - 4 January 2024) was an American writer and poet who served as poet laureate of North Carolina, USA from 1997–2002 and taught English at the University of North Carolina for 40 years. His novel Dagon, which was named Best Foreign Book of 1968 by the Académie Française, blends the Southern Gothic genre with hints of the Cthulhu Mythos--opening with a quote from H. P. Lovecraft, "Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl ftagn." Chappell has written other fiction related to the Mythos, including the short stories "The Adder" and "In the Rue d'Auseil".
