They are best known for their Warhammer Fantasy Battles/Age of Sigmar fantasy and Warhammer 40,000 science fiction settings.

Founded in 1975 by Steve Jackson, Ian Livingston, and John Peake, Games Workshop started out selling traditional gaming accessories such as game boards through a mail order service. The company gained traction in the gaming industry after landing U.K. distribution rights for TSR, Inc.'s fantasy roleplaying game Dungeons & Dragons, and followed up on this success by obtaining licenses to publish material for other roleplaying properties, including Chaosium's Runequest and Iron Crown Enterprises' Middle-earth Role Playing, as well as wargames and miniatures for Doctor Who and various 2000AD properties.

During the early- to mid-1980s, Games Workshop produced a number of supplements for another of Chaosium's franchises, Call of Cthulhu, and published further material in their monthly magazine White Dwarf. During the early 1990s, they began to eliminate all properties which they did not own from their catalogues, focussing solely on their own products; they have maintained this business model in the years since.
