Gemma Files (April 4, 1968) is a Canadian horror and dark fantasy writer. Her work has appeared in numerous anthologies of Lovecraftian fiction, including A Mountain Walked, Lovecraft Unbound, Lovecraft's Monsters, Autumn Cthulhu, Dreams From the Witch House, Cthulhu's Daughters, and Black Seas of Infinity.
Files was born in London, England, to actors Elva Mai Hoover and Gary Files. The family relocated to Toronto, Ontario, where Files still resides. A graduate of Ryerson University, she reviewed film for Toronto's eye Weekly from 1993-2001, and taught at the Toronto Film School from 2001-2008.[1]
She is the author of over 100 short stories, five short-story collections, and five novels,[2] including Experimental Film, which won the 2015 Shirley Jackson Award for best novel.[3] Her short story, "The Emperor's Old Bones", won the International Horror Guild Award for Best Short Story of 1999.[4] Five of her short stories were adapted by the Canadian horror anthology TV series The Hunger.[5] Files has also published three collections of poetry.[2]
Gemma Files married the science fiction and fantasy writer Stephen J. Barringer in 2002. They have one son.[6]
