The Great Library of Celaeno is a fictional extraterrestrial library created by August Derleth for his Cthulhu Mythos short story series The Trail of Cthulhu.

Description[]

As its name indicates, the library is located on a world orbiting the star Celaeno, and contains "books and hieroglyphs stolen from the Elder Gods". (AWD: "The House on Curwen Street")

It is a vast, ancient stone structure of gigantic proportions, as if built by a species much larger than humans, including at least one colossal round window and a number of monolithic columns and shelves, holding equally enormous books with strange hieroglyphs. (AWD: "The Gorge Beyond Salapunco")

In Other Media[]

  • Demonbane: The Great Library of Celaeno appears as one of the worlds where Demonbane and Liber Legis fought through during their final battle at the Outerverse. The Library was described to be filled with many arcane tomes, including books about the Elder Gods, with bat-winged creatures that could be seen flying in the distance.
  • Haiyore! Nyaruko-san: The Great Library of Celaeno appears in the episode "Celaeno Library War", where it is stated to have the largest collection of books in the universe, containing any and all wisdom including the rarest grimoires known to exist. Zhar and Lloigor infiltrated the library to steal the Evil Deity’s Memo Pad for the "Nonexistent Deity Plan", in order to receive more funds for their sketchy environmentalist group by creating new endangered species to protect.
