This subject contains information from the Expanded Cthulhu Mythos, and not based on H.P. Lovecraft's works directly. Henri-Laurent de Marigny is a fictional character created by Brian Lumley as a companion for Titus Crow, a time-travelling adventurer engaged in a long war with the Cthulhu Cycle Deities about whom Lumley wrote an extensive series of stories. Lumley presents him as the son of a character featured by H. P. Lovecraft and E. Hoffmann Price in "Through the Gates of the Silver Key".

Biography[]

Born to noted occultist Etienne-Laurent de Marigny some time in 1923, upon the death of his father Henri inherited an extensive library of mystic knowledge amongst other things. After making the acquaintance of Titus Crow, another man with a deep understanding of the occult, the pair proceeded to embark on a course of action which would bring them into direct conflict with many Mythos entities (which they refer to as the Cthulhu Cycle Dieties), Ithaqua in particular appearing to consider them something of a nemesis.

Throughout the course of their conflict with these beings, de Marigny has fought several Mythos beings -- alone, by the side of Crow, and as part of the Wilmarth Foundation -- has travelled to places unknown to the general populace, including Earth's Dreamlands, and has mastered the use of the time travelling device left to him by his father known as de Marigny's Clock.

Although an accomplished occultist in his own right, de Marigny is usually overshadowed by the understanding possessed by his companion Crow; however, this does not seem to overly concern him. The only Lumley story in which de Marigny serves as a main character without an appearance by Crow is "The Mirror of Nitocris".
