Henry R. "Hank" Flynn is a character created by American writer Josh Finney for his Mythos/noir Casefile: Arkham comic book stories. He made his first appearance in the graphic novel Casefile: Arkham- Nightmare on the Canvas in February 2016.
Description[]
Flynn is a cynical New Englander who works as a private investigator to pay the bills. A former marine, he sustained an injury amidst ancient ruins on an unspecified island, seems to have given him some connection to a mystical force which he can tap into in times of great stress, although he seems entirely unable to control its effects. He is in love with a woman named Glynda, a self-styled witch with a deep, if bookish, knowledge of the occult.
History[]
Flynn served as a marine in the Pacific theatre during the Second World War where he suffered head trauma from an artillery blast which left him with a piece of shrapnel embedded in his skull. After being invalided out of the service, Flynn returned to his home town of Arkham, where he set himself up as a private investigator.
In 1946, Flynn was hired by a woman named May Derlith to find missing artist Richard Upton Pickman, to whom she was both benefactor and lover. However, Pickman had gone insane, murdering those who had in his human life denied his talent, and eventually turned his rage on Derlith before being shot and killed by Flynn.
Three months later, Flynn was hired by Asenath Waite under the pretext of tracking down a manuscript belonging to her dead husband, Edward Pickman Derby. He soon came to realise that she was using him as a pawn in her quest to track down those responsible for Derby's death and as a tool to kill her father. He refused to cooperate any further with Waite, and Glynda ended the charade by exposing both to the public.
