Howard Vachel Brown (1878 - 1945) was an American science fiction artist who provided the original illustrations for H. P. Lovecraft's novellas At the Mountains of Madness and The Shadow Out of Time, both published in the magazine Astounding Stories in 1936. He also illustrated stories by Frank Belknap Long, Donald Wandrei, Jack Williamson, and others.

Brown started working as a professional artist in the 1900s. Some of his early work includes illustrating Katharine Elizabeth Dopp's The Tree-Dwellers (a non-fiction book about life in prehistory) in 1904, and H. G. Wells' feminist novel Ann Veronica in 1909.

In the 1920s, he provided the cover art for several issues of Hugo Gernsback's magazine Science and Invention, whereas the interior art was done by Frank R. Paul. In the 1930s, Brown was the main cover artist for Astounding Stories and Thrilling Wonder Stories.

Trivia[]

  • One of Brown's illustrations for The Shadow Out of Time showcases several alien creatures. Included as an Easter egg are two species that Brown had previously illustrated for Astounding: an Elder Thing from At the Mountains of Madness and a Centaurian from Murray Leinster's "Proxima Centauri".
