They say foul things of Old Times still lurk

In dark forgotten corners of the world.

And Gates still gape to loose, on certain nights.

Shapes pent in Hell.
~ Justin Geoffrey , The People of the Monolith

Justin Geoffrey (1898–1926) is a fictional character created by Robert E. Howard for his short story "The Black Stone". He was a poet who wrote The People of the Monolith after visiting the village of Stregoicavar in Hungary.

History[]

Geoffrey came from a family of merchants with no interest in art or poetry. As a child, he went to sleep one summer night beside a long-abandoned, sinister-looking farmhouse, an incident that was later marked as the beginning of his insanity. Afterwards, he developed an increasingly violent temper (in contrast to his family's well known friendliness and sociability) as well as the habit of sneaking out of the house late at night to go exploring. Justin left home at the age of 17, after reluctantly completing high school. (The House)

He was a friend of Edward Pickman Derby, the husband of Asenath Waite. (HPL: "The Thing on the Doorstep").

After his travel to Hungary and his encounter there with the Black Stone, he was remembered by the villagers of Stregoicavar as acting in an odd manner, with a habit of mumbling to himself. He subsequently died "screaming in a madhouse."
