“ | Mr. Blayne, for more than three decades I have been on the trail of Cthulhu. Time after time I have believed that I have closed his avenues of ingress into our time; time after time I have been misled in thinking so. | „ | |
~ Laban Shrewsbury, AWD: "The Black Island" |
Professor Laban Shrewsbury is a character created by August Derleth as the main protagonist for his The Trail of Cthulhu series of short stories.
Overview[]
A member of the faculty at Arkham's Miskatonic University, Laban Shrewsbury was the institutions' Professor for Anthropology and Philosophy. For years, he has dedicated himself to the study of the Cthulhu mythic cycle, learning astral projection and how to summon the Byakhee (which are enemies of Cthulhu), hoping one day to be able to defeat or at least temporarily deter the cosmic entity. His studies have taken him beyond the Solar System, to the Great Library of Celaeno.
Shrewsbury's dark glasses conceal the fact that he has no eyes. It's not known whether he was born that way or somehow lost them, but the lack of eyes doesn't seem to impair him in any way. (AWD: The Trail of Cthulhu)
He is the author of An Investigation Into the Myth-Patterns of Latterday Primitives With Especial Reference to the R'lyeh Text, and Cthulhu in the Necronomicon.
