Lavinia Whateley is a fictional character created by H. P. Lovecraft for his short story "The Dunwich Horror". She appears as the albino daughter of the wizard Old Whateley and the mother of Wilbur Whateley and the Dunwich Horror. The children's father is the entity Yog-Sothoth, summoned by Old Whateley for the purpose of impregnating Lavinia.
Born in 1878, Lavinia loses her mother to an unexplained and violent death when she was 12 years old. She is in her mid 30s at the time of Wilbur's birth. She goes missing on Halloween night 1926, at the age of 48. While no conclusions are spelled out in the story, it is implied Wilbur killed her.
Lavinia is described as an unattractive albino woman with the characteristically weak Whateley chin. She is uneducated except for the bits of ancient lore she gleans from her father's books and his limited tutoring. Her appearance is described as "slatternly," and she is prone to wild daydreams.
A younger version of Lavinia appears in the video game Fate/Grand Order, as a fictional character summoned in a magical version of Salem during the witch trials, together with her grandfather. She is an albino who is connected to the Outer Gods, but being 12 years old, she lacks the implications of her main Mythos counterpart. She is a friend of Abigail Williams, who is possessed by Yog-Sothoth. (EXP: Forbidden Advent Garden Salem)
Behind the Mythos[]
She is likely named after the character in Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus, who is horribly mutilated and raped before being murdered by her father.
