"Lost Soul" is a short Cthulhu Mythos story by American author Jeffrey Thomas. It was first published in the Necropolitan Press collection The Bones of the Old Ones and Other Lovecraftian Tales in 1995.[1]
The story's title refers not only to those who were transported to alien dimensions, but to the mental state of one of the main characters, Meredith, who has no direction to her life.
Synopsis[]
When thrill-seeking Leonard, his half-sister Meredith, and his girlfriend Andrea come into possession of an occult text - whose author mysteriously disappeared decades ago - they attempt to use the knowledge contained within to open a portal to another dimension. However, opening this gateway summons back the soul of the book's creator, who kills Andrea and sucks Leonard away to another plane of existence. Meredith is able to secure her freedom through trading the book with its former owner, but later resolves to do anything in her power to find another portal and rescue her missing sibling.
Mythos Connections[]
The book used by Leonard, Meredith and Andrea, The Book of Awe, is stated to have been compiled from fragments from the Necronomicon, "The Pnakotic Manuscripts, The Book of Dzyan...Der Vermis Mysteriis, The Book of Thoth, Liber Ivonis and The Metal Book".
