M'nagalah is a Great Old One in the expanded Cthulhu Mythos. The character was originally created by Len Wein for DC Comics and made its first appearance in Swamp Thing Vol 1 #8 "The Lurker in Tunnel 13", depicting the entity as a threat to the entire universe.
Soon afterwards, M'nagalah was introduced to the Mythos proper in Ramsey Campbell's short story "The Tugging", and was later incorporated into the role-playing game Call of Cthulhu. (EXP: Malleus Monstrorum)
Background[]
In prehistoric times, M'nagalah ruled over the Tethys Ocean and was described as being "Cthulhu's right-hand man". (EXP: Nightmare's Disciple) Some drawings of M'nagalah were documented in The Revelations of Glaaki, depicted as being a tentacled mass consisting of ropey intestine-like appendages and numerous eyes. (EXP: "The Tugging")
In the DC Multiverse[]
New Earth[]
Billions of years ago, M'nagalah and the other Elder Gods were able to roam the universe at will through a cosmic doorway located on Earth, until they were shut off from the cosmos by the Golden Ones. Despite this, M'nagalah and his kind were still able to reach out across the dimensional barriers and touched the minds of learned men, twisting their intellect with visions and corrupting their souls. (ADJ: Challengers of the Unknown) M'nagalah claimed to have created all life on Earth and bestowed mankind with the capacity for mindless violence, as well as influencing the minds of some of humanity's greatest scribes, including H. P. Lovecraft, Ambrose Bierce and Edgar Allan Poe. (ADJ: "The Lurker in Tunnel 13")
In the year 1684, M'nagalah used the Book of Ending to infect the hand of a Ukranian girl named Elaina and later used his influence on her to conduct a ritual that would allow him to fully manifest in Chernobyl. In an alternate future, M'nagalah consumed all life on Earth, but this was ultimately prevented by the time-traveling efforts of the Trenchcoat Brigade. (ADJ: The Trenchcoat Brigade)
By the year 1904, the occult practices of Abraham Monroe allowed M'nagalah to manifest in the town of Perdition, Pennsylvania. Starting off as a growth on his arm, M'nagalah eventually infected Abraham's entire body and consumed many others so that he could gain more mass, dwelling in one of the town's mine shafts named Tunnel 13 and terrorizing the town for over 70 years. During his encounter with the Swamp Thing, M'nagalah attempted to consume the supernatural monster in order to reach his full mass and conquer the entire universe. Although he was seemingly destroyed after the Swamp Thing caused the tunnel to collapse on top of him, a piece of M'nagalah survived and was growing on the arm of Abraham's grandson, Jason. (ADJ: "The Lurker in Tunnel 13") Much like his grandfather, Jason became a host body for M'nagalah, who also infected the mind and body of his cousin, Dr. Heathcliff Monroe. The doctor and his cult tried to open the Seven Doorways that would free M'nagalah's kind to take over the universe, but their plans were foiled by the Challengers of the Unknown, a team of scientist-adventurers, with some help from the Swamp Thing. (ADJ: Challengers of the Unknown)
Many years later, M'nagalah took up residence in the New England city of Ivy Town, where he would engage in a war against the forces of science led by the alien invaders known as "the Waiting"; while both sides also had a conflict with Ryan Choi, the All-New Atom. (ADJ: "My Life in Miniature")
Prime Earth[]
In one alternate reality, M'nagalah was sealed away by one of the four alabaster columns, trapped beneath a mine shaft in the town of Perdition. M'nagalah used his influence to torment the residents for decades until he was critically injured by the Secret Six member Big Shot, impaling him with the alabaster column. Shortly afterwards, M'nagalah was presumably devoured and killed by the townspeople. (ADJ: "House of Strangers")
