Malcolm Mayweather is a character created by Canadian author Troy Young for his Nyarlathotep Cycle series of Cthulhu Mythos stories.
Description[]
Mayweather is a tall, physically fit black Canadian man, likely in his late twenties or early thirties. Since a violent encounter with a magic-using Nyarlathotep cultist, he is missing his left arm. He is capable of utilising minor magic, but the effects of this appear to consist solely of the ability to keep away the effects of the nightmares caused by exposure to the entities of the Cthulhu Mythos.
Mayweather was exposed to radiation in a temple to Nyarlathotep which caused him to develop a highly-aggressive form of cancer. It has been speculated that this is a magical affliction, which Nyarlathotep is capable of accelerating, halting, and perhaps even reversing.
A relationship had begun to form between Mayweather and junior agent Charlene Hines; this was cut short with the death of both parties.
History[]
In the mundane world, Mayweather was a firefighter. Attending a call to a burning building (a blaze which had been started by agent Adele Kramer whilst on a mission) Mayweather encountered a Shoggoth, an event which brought him to the attention of Harjit Singh of the Department of Extraordinary Phenomena.
After being recruited into the department, he was partnered with a senior agent, Mindy Nguyen, who would supervise him on his first mission. He has since embarked on a number of missions without Mindy but has usually been assigned other partners, sometimes from the international investigative community. After Mindy's death - a mercy-killing at Mayweather's hands - he was assigned to mentor new agent Charlene Hines.
Mayweather was killed while on a mission to the South Pacific, with the goal of preventing Cthulhu from awakening, his mind shattered from the psychic emanations emitted by the Great Old One, and his body ceasing to function.
Missions[]
In chronological order, Mayweather has been assigned to the following locations:
- Canada: Mayweather's first mission. He and Mindy Nguyen battled a Saskatchewan cultist with the ability to control rats (EXP: "The Rat King").
- Egypt: as part of an international venture, he explored a recently-discovered pyramid and met an avatar of Nyarlathotep (EXP: "The Pyramid of the Black Pharaoh").
- Scotland: was partnered with a British researcher; the two exposed a cult to Yog-Sothoth in the nation's capital (EXP: "The Druid of Castle Rock").
- Canada: was partnered with a treacherous Norwegian researcher who took his left arm when uncovered (EXP: "The Viking's Doom").
- Canada: he and Mindy Nguyen encountered an entity devoted to spreading pestilence through the city of Winnipeg. Mayweather was forced to kill Mindy as an act of mercy after she was infected by the virus (EXP: "The Tattered Lady").
- Canada: was assigned to partner new recruit Charlene Hines on a mission to recover a book of magic (EXP: "The Shade of Pierre Girault").
- Canada: he and Hines investigated the appearance of a long-lost painting by Richard Upton Pickman (EXP: "The Misplaced Masterpiece of Richard Upton Pickman").
- Canada: along with Hines, defeated a witch whose spirit had become immortal and was murdering those who had wronged her (EXP: "The Curse of the Windsor Witch").
- South Pacific: died on a mission with Singh, Kramer and Hines, attempting to prevent the Great Old One Cthulhu from awakening (EXP: "In the Depths of R'lyeh").
