The Malleus Monstrorum, which is a faux-Latin play on the late medieval text Malleus Maleficarum [1], is a gaming supplement for Chaosium's Call of Cthulhu horror roleplaying game. First released in 2006, it was a revised and considerably updated development of 1998's Creature Companion [2].
All editions of the book have been "monster manuals": collections of various monsters, deities, spirits, and other creatures, giving background details along with relevant statistics for use in Call of Cthulhu.
Editions[]
First Edition[]
The first edition of Malleus Monstrorum was written by Scott David Aniolowski and consisted of the contents of the books Ye Booke of Monstres, and Ye Booke of Monstres II, as well as additional material, some of which was taken from foreign language supplements for Call of Cthulhu [3].
Second Edition[]
The second edition was written by Aniolowski along with Mike Mason and Paul Fricker. This edition was released in a two-volume hardcover set, with the contents divided between "monsters" and "deities".
Deluxe leatherette and digital editions were also released for this printing, and a Keeper Deck, which contained reference cards for 60 of the most popular beings in the game, was issued in accompaniment to the main book.
