They leaped as though they had hooves instead of feet, and seemed to wear a sort of wig or headpiece with small horns. Of other clothing they had none, but most of them were quite furry. Behind they had dwarfish tails, and when they glanced upward he saw the excessive width of their mouths. Then he knew what they were, and that they did not wear any wigs or headpieces after all. For the cryptic folk of Leng were of one race with the uncomfortable merchants of the black galleys that traded rubies at Dylath-Leen.

This subject contains information from the "Lovecraft Circle" Myth Cycles, and while guided by HPL are not based on his work alone. The Men of Leng are an intelligent race that appear in The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath. They were enslaved by the moon beasts.

Etymology

These beings receive their name from the Plateau of Leng, in particular from their dream-like counterpart, which is said to be indigenous.

Appearance

In addition to what has already been said, most of these humanoids are very hairy, have hooves and tend to man-eating as we were told in the black galleys. Leng's men are vulgar and grotesque creatures, with most doubtful tastes and desires.

Behavior

The Men of Leng behave like humans. When the arrival of the moon beasts took place, the men of Leng received them as gods, but soon after their "new gods" invaded them and enslaved all their species.

The Men of Leng were destined by their masters to perform the most ignominious servile tasks, for which no exceptional force was required, such as ruling the helm and cooking, running errands, and negotiating with men on earth or on other planets with the ones they maintained trade. Also, the fattest of their kind are the food of the moon beasts.

The most notable of the men of Leng are the merchants, who are sent to Dylath-Leen, where they must sell the rubies mined from the moon mines and subsequently buy more slaves and gold. The acquired prisoners are sent back to the moon and, once there, are usually assigned to work in the mines.
