The H.P. Lovecraft Wiki

This subject is written on a topic in the real world and reflects factual information. Margaret Alice Murray (13 July 1863 – 13 November 1963) was a multi-discipline researcher into the history and psychology of the human species. Her work intersected with several major tenets of the Cthulhu Mythos, including the study of ancient Egyptian culture and such tropes as the ancient cult lurking just out of sight of an oblivious population. Indeed, H. P. Lovecraft mentioned that he "had just been reading Miss Murray's The Witch-Cult in Western Europe" when he wrote his short story "The Festival" [1]. Another of Lovecraft’s stories likely to have taken inspiration from The Witch-Cult is "The Horror at Red Hook."
