~ EXP: "Passing of a Dreamer", Gary Myers |
The Messenger of Azathoth is a fictional monster created by Gary Myers for his short story "Passing of a Dreamer", where it is encountered by the dreamer Snireth-Ko on the dark side of the Dreamlands' moon.
This creature has also been incorporated into the role-playing game Call of Cthulhu, where it is portrayed as a "seed" destined to "fertilize" and destroy the Dreamlands' moon.
In the Call of Cthulhu RPG[]
The Messenger of Azathoth is a "seed" drifting through the Dreamlands towards the moon. When it comes in contact with the satellite, it will melt through the ground and lodge itself in its core, where it will begin to grow, boiling the Lake of Ubboth and consuming Mnomquah in the process. While burrowing, it will radiate an intense green light that causes those who come near it to undergo a gradual deterioration until their bodies finally dissolve into living "pools of protoplasm". The Messenger can't be destroyed by physical means, only by magical artefacts. If allowed to reach maturity, it will eventually break free, destroying the Dreamlands' moon with cataclysmic consequences not only for the dream realm, but for the sanity of all the Waking World's population as well. Behind the Mythos[]
In the works of H. P. Lovecraft, Nyarlathotep holds the role of Azathoth's messenger (HPL: Fungi from Yuggoth) and is known to operate from the dark side of the Dreamlands' moon with his Moon-beast allies (HPL: The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath). It's not known whether Myers intended the creature from "Passing of a Dreamer" to be Nyarlathotep, but the RPG classifies it as a distinct servitor race, apparently unconnected to the Crawling Chaos.
