In the story, Nug-Soth is a magician who served "the dark conquerors" around 16,000 AD. They were the victim of a mind transfer with a member of the Great Race of Yith, and their consciousness was sent back to 150,000,000 BC to meet with Professor Peaslee. Peaslee listed Nug-Soth's name among the other humans he met during his experience, as opposed to the non-human intelligences he mentioned earlier, thus suggesting that Nug-Soth might have once been human. (HPL: The Shadow Out of Time)

In "Dreams in the House of Weir", by Lin Carter, "Nug-Soth" is the name of Zkauba's species, the tapir-snouted Yaddithians that first appeared in "Through the Gates of the Silver Key", by H. P. Lovecraft and E. Hoffmann Price. These creatures once lived on Yaddith, and are said to have similar traits to mammals, reptiles and insects. Some of them survived the destruction of the crust of their planet from the Dholes. Most of their civilisation was destroyed by the Dholes, and the survivors of the Nug-Soth have fled to other planets, planes, dimensions and times to hide from the invaders. They used to be the dominant intelligent life on their planet before the arrival of the Dholes. The Yaddithians are known to be a race of powerful wizards and brilliant scientists who were able to create machines that could travel through space and time.
