The Onga are a fictional Congo river basin tribe created by the late American author H. P. Lovecraft for his 1920 short story "Facts Concerning the Late Arthur Jermyn and His Family".
Overview[]
The Onga were first encountered by Sir Wade Jermyn during his expedition to the Congo river basin in the mid-1700s. In the time "Arthur Jermyn" takes place, the titular character also travelled to the basin on a research expedition, where he too encountered the Onga.
The Onga retained cultural memory and legends regarding the "white apes" of the nearby jungle ruins.
Possible Etymology[]
Their name may be related to the Ngoe, or Nkongho language groups spoken by the Bantu peoples of what is now Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and Cameroon. (source?)
