The Primitive Snouter is a fictional species of small mammals created by Gerolf Steiner for his 1961 book The Snouters: Form and Life of the Rhinogrades. It has been incorporated into the Cthulhu Mythos by the role-playing game Call of Cthulhu, which identifies it as an ancestor of the Buopoth.

Description[]

Primitive Snouters are, as their name indicates, the most basal members of the order of mammals known as the snouters, a.k.a. Rhinogradentia, which inhabited the Hy-yi-yi islands before their sinking. They are named for their extraordinary well-developed snouts. The Primitive Snouter is a mouse-sized forest animal which can balance itself on its snout while feasting on its favorite food: cockroaches. (ADJ: The Snouters)

Although once thought to be extinct, Primitive Snouter populations have been discovered to be alive and well in the Dreamlands, where they can be found along the trade routes to Mhor. They are known for their curious disposition and propensity to steal objects from distracted travelers. (EXP: H. P. Lovecraft's Dreamlands)
