"Providence: Two Gentlemen Meet at Midnight" is a short Cthulhu Mythos poem by the late American author and friend of Lovecraft, August Derleth. It was first published in the Autumn 1948 edition of defunct magazine The Arkham Sampler.
Synopsis[]
The piece is written as a conversation between two men, H.P.L. and E.A.P., as they discuss the city of Providence, Rhode Island.
Behind the Mythos[]
The poem would seem to have inspired at least the germ of a story in Derleth, one which may have gone on to be developed in his "posthumous collaboration" "The Dark Brotherhood".
The character H.P.L. mentions the entities Dagon, Yog-Sothoth, and Cthulhu when discussing the evils which have befallen the world.
