The Sanbourne Institute of Pacific Antiquities is a fictional research facility created by Lin Carter for his Xothic Legend Cycle.
Overview[]
Mirroring H. P. Lovecraft's Miskatonic University in that, aside from their more mundane departments, the two have a particular specialisation in the occult, maintaining extensive libraries on the subject. However, Sanbourne seems to lean more towards the research aspect of graduate study rather than higher learning as with Miskatonic, specialising in the study of cultures in and around the Pacific Ocean.
History[]
Sanbourne was founded by the son of a tuna-packing magnate in Santiago, California.
In Robert M. Price's short story "Down in Limbo", the institute is said to have been absorbed into "the University," although it is unclear which university is being referred to.
