Location[]

Situated in the northern Dreamlands, in a valley by the Plateau of Leng, above an entrance to the underground Abyss sections of the Dreamlands. It is beside the sea, but the rocks are jagged; human ships do not go there, although Black Galleys sometimes do.

Out in the water is a mountainous granite island, with windowless dwellings and paths carved into the rock, inhabited by Moon-beasts and their slaves. (HPL: The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath)

Description[]

The city was "proud and pillared ... wondrous with high fanes and carven places", filled with pillars of black stone. It was a seaport. In modern times its stones and pillars are broken, and overgrown with weeds and grass.

The basalt cliffs of Leng beside which the city stands are carved with frescos, and there is an archway there leading up to Leng itself.

The underground entrance, a huge black stone staircase (of narrow steps and, in modern times, slippery with mold) in the central plaza, is flanked by two huge diorite sphinxes. The six gates of the city are likewise crowned by sphinxes. (HPL: The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath)

History[]

A million years before the first true humans, Sarkomand was invaded by Moon-beasts and it's inhabitants conquered. The city was abandoned.

In modern times, Randolph Carter and an army of Ghouls and Night-gaunts fought the Moon-beasts there, in retaliation for them having captured and tortured some ghouls. (HPL: The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath)
