Seaman Schmidt is a fictional character in the story "The Temple" by H. P. Lovecraft. He served aboard the German submarine U-29 under Lieutenant-Commander Karl Heinrich during the First World War. As a result of the supernatural events experienced by the crew, both Schmidt and Seaman Bohm became sick and lapsed into violent insanity. Their constant ravings concerning a "terrible curse" upon the submarine led Heinrich to execute them in order to maintain discipline.
