Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos is a Lovecraftian anthology first published by Arkham House in 1969, edited by H. P. Lovecraft's friend and literary executor August Derleth. Arkham House released a revised edition in 1990, edited by James Turner, that omitted four stories and added seven others.
Overview[]
First published by Arkham House in a hardcover format in 1969, Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos contains twenty stories with an introduction by Derleth. It has since been translated into French, and has actually had more French editions than English.
Although many of the stories were written by authors considered to be a part of Lovecraft's circle, it also contains a handful from more recent contributors to the Mythos. Six stories appeared for the first time in the volume, including pieces by Ramsey Campbell, Colin Wilson, J. Vernon Shea, James Wade, and two by Brian Lumley.
The 1990 version dropped four of the six stories original to the 1969 edition, keeping only Campbell and Wilson's contributions. It substituted a different Lumley story, "Rising with Surtsey". The added stories included one by Lovecraft Circle member Fritz Leiber, and pieces by Joanna Russ, Karl Edward Wagner, Philip José Farmer, Stephen King, and Richard A. Lupoff. A new introduction by James Turner was also included.
