Synopsis[]
A group of university friends dabbling in the occult unwittingly summon a being of great power which offers one of their number to its masters, a race of sadistic extra-dimensional creatures.
Characters[]
- Unnamed Narrator, a member of a circle of friends with an interest in the occult.
- Graf Norden, another member of the group, and the one with the most learning in the subject.
- Dureen, a creature known as a seeker, sent forth by its masters the Adumbrali to fetch them fresh playthings.
- Colby, another member of the group, apparently quite foolhardy.

"The Abyss" first saw print in the February 1941 issue of Stirring Science Stories and has been reprinted many times in many different publications.
Trivia[]
- "The Abyss" saw the first appearance of Lowndes' occult manuscript the Song of Yste, which is spoken of in the same context as the Necronomicon and the Book of Eibon.
