A dangerous cult has risen in Arkham! Meeting in secret, these heretics and madmen consort with dark powers and offer up sacrifices to the Ancient One, while hordes of vicious monsters descend on the town. It’s up to a small band of Investigators to infiltrate the cult and learn from these dark rituals, yet even the most pure-hearted may find himself corrupted in the process. Will their efforts be enough to stop the Ancient One from awakening, or will the Investigators succumb, one by one, to the blasphemous seduction of its Herald, the Black Goat of the Woods?

This subject is written on a topic in the real world and reflects factual information. This subject contains information from the Expanded Cthulhu Mythos, and not based on H.P. Lovecraft's works directly. The Black Goat of the Woods was the fifth expansion pack for Fantasy Flight Games' Second Edition of Lovecraftian adventure board game Arkham Horror, released in June 2008.

Overview

A cards-only expansion, The Black Goat of the Woods did not include the optional game board seen in some of the larger packs. It included an additional 90 Investigator and 88 Ancient One cards to diversify games of Arkham Horror, and a new Herald, the Black Goat of the Woods, along with a handful of additional Monster tokens.

In addition, the expansion introduced two new optional mechanics to change how the core game plays, and a difficulty level selector system to allow for easier or more challenging gameplay. The new mechanics were Cult Encounters, which allowed Investigators to interact more deeply with Arkham's occult elements, and Investigator Corruption, a system by which Investigators slowly gain negative effects as their adventure progresses.
