"The Black Pool" is a short story by British author and games designer James "Grim" Desborough. It was published in the thematic anthology Lovecraft after Dark by James Ward Kirk Publishing in November 2015.
Synopsis[]
A young heiress in post-WWI Britain uses her vast fortune to indulge in her every whim and desire, searching for a way to lose herself in sensation. Despite her wealth, she is unable to find what she is looking for and eventually becomes jaded with life, until she meets a man who whispers to her of a place which may provide what she seeks.
Travelling to Iceland, she eventually locates a lodge for the rich and decadent, and is introduced to their secret. Led deep beneath the surface to a colossal cave system, she encounters a strange, tar-like being which takes her to the extremes of pleasure. Deciding that her life is no longer worth living, she resolves to surrender to the being one last time before allowing it to consume her.
Behind the Mythos[]
The creature encountered in the bowels of the Earth is intended to be a Shoggoth, as evidenced by its soft call of "Tekeli-li".
